Airlines Test Flights in the Deceptive Volcanic Ash Dilemma.


As rumors continue of the prolonged the volcanic ash dilemma and emergency talks take place in the UK—several test flights in the supposed invisible volcanic ash area are reported as successful.

While emergency talks began early Monday morning, forecasters of the Volcanic Ash report that the “ash air problem” may continue until Thursday or Friday. On Thursday, all of the 5 NATO military exercises will be completed in Northern Europe. As of today all airlines are grounded in Britain at least until Tuesday 0100 GMT.

Transportation Executives are criticizing the computerized procedure used to gauge airline safety and the volcanic ash.

Matthias Ruete, the Commission’s director general of transport, criticized national air traffic authorities for relying on a single source of scientific evidence for the four day ban, which has created a major aviation crisis.

“The science behind the model we are running at the moment is based on certain assumptions where we do not have clear scientific evidence,” he said.

“We don’t even know what density the cloud should be in order to affect jet engines. We have a model that runs on mathematical projections.”

“It is probability rather than actual things happening.”

Met Office is projecting the danger and abjures to ascertain the actuality of the situation.

British Airways said one of its planes encountered “perfect” conditions between Heathrow and Cardiff airport.

While British airports remained closed on Monday several European airports opened including in Spain, Austria, Finland, Bosnia and Italy.

Dutch airports are due to reopen airspace on Monday morning while Germany will reopen this afternoon after opening 6 airports.

On Sunday Willie Walsh, BA’s chief executive, joined four crew in a three-hour test flight from London, over the Atlantic, to Cardiff.

The flight, which took the aircraft out over the Atlantic Ocean, lasted two hours and 46 minutes with flying conditions described as “perfect”.

Engineers at the airline are studying the effects of the flight on engines before concluding whether it is safe to fly or not.

A BA spokesman said: “We would not be doing this if we did not think it was safe and didn’t have the necessary permission. We would not do anything which would jeopardize our crew or aircraft.”
The Dutch airline KLM had earlier carried out a test flight through the ash cloud over Dutch airspace.

All reports of airspace are returned as “perfect”!

A spokesman for the airline said: “We have not found anything unusual and no irregularities, which indicates the atmosphere is clean and safe to fly.”

Lufthansa also flew 10 aircraft from Munich to Frankfurt on Saturday with the blessing of the safety authorities.
A spokesman said: “We found no damage to the engines, fuselage or cockpit windows. This is why we are urging the aviation authorities to run more test flights rather than relying on computer models.”

Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus, the Secretary General of the Association of European Airlines, said: “Verification flights undertaken by several of our airlines have revealed no irregularities at all; this confirms our requirement that other options should be deployed to determine genuine risk”.

BRUSSELS — Several NATO F-16 fighters suffered engine damage after flying through the volcanic ash cloud covering large parts of Europe, a senior Western diplomat said.

The official declined to provide more details on the military flights, except to say that glasslike deposits were found inside the planes’ engines after they patroled over European airspace.
